If you want to grow long hair naturally, don't worry, there are so many ways to achieve your goals. You can grow long hair that is beautiful and healthy, naturally, without toxic junky ingredients.
You may be in the process of transitioning away from shampoos that contain ingredients which you cannot pronounce. I've been there and I feel your pain.
Not only is it a lot to wade through, but adjusting to natural hair care isn't necessarily easy. Especially if you're used to lots of sudsy foamy shampoos!
Because I try to avoid certain chemicals my priority is to find products with ingredients I can understand. Shampoos with ingredients that dry out the hair are out of the question. Dry hair is often brittle and breaks easily.
Three out of four of my daughters and I all prefer keeping our hair long. When you have long hair it is imperative that you do what you can to keep looking good. By this I mean shiny and beautiful without a lot of split ends. Long hair full of split ends just doesn't look as beautiful as long glossy hair.
Curly hair also looks better when it is moisture balanced. Something my daughter strives for with her long naturally curly hair. The right products will go a long way towards achieving this goal.
Using a natural bristle brush to gently move your scalp's natural oils down the hair shaft will help with that moisture balance as well. If you have dry hair, like I do, you might consider using a hair oil to bring back some of that moisturizing effect.
Hair Cuts to Keep Hair Looking Healthy
To grow my hair long I schedule my cuts or trim my hair myself according to a Lunar Chart by Morrocco Method. (You can just go by the moon phases if you want to.) You'll notice dates for cutting during the Spring Equinox sometime in March. These dates are lengthening dates, meaning there is no better time than the year’s Spring Equinox for those wanting to naturally lengthen their hair.
However, you will find all the best dates throughout the year for haircuts on the lunar hair chart. Including designated days for every month of the year. Yes, I always have the calendar out when I'm scheduling my hair appointments or cutting my own hair.
As recommended, I prefer to cut my own hair using the blunt snip method. Salon cutting methods that shear, strip, or layer will often weaken the hair, causing breakage or damage later. I ask my hairstylist not to use these methods and only cut my hair with the blunt snip method. She's fine with that. It helps if you keep communication a priority so that your hairdresser knows what you like.
The bottom line: regular trims will keep the split ends under control and that will lead to less breakage and longer hair.
Shampoo and Conditioner to Grow Long Hair
To avoid buildup, I rotate my hair products. Because I have dry scalp, I often use the shampoo bar and conditioner bar from Morrocco Method, but I rotate them with another product. If you have dandruff or dry scalp read how I eliminated dust and flakes here.
For cleansing and conditioning my hair I have really enjoyed rotating Morrocco Method raw vegan shampoos and conditioners. In the following video I explain what comes in the starter kit as well as a little about how I keep our longer hair shiny and healthy looking.
Morrocco Method Raw Vegan Natural Hair Products
I discovered these products because I had irritation and other problems with my scalp, so that's when I started looking into vegan products. I found a scalp mask and also a scalp massager on the Morrocco Method website which I promptly purchased and began using.
A healthy scalp does a lot for hair growth just like fertile soil results in an abundant garden. You need a healthy scalp to be able to deliver as many nutrients and oxygen to your hair follicles as possible.
When I stopped using any old shampoo off the supermarket shelf and replaced those with high quality products with ingredients that targeted my needs, I saw growth. As my scalp began to feel less irritated, my hair started to grow long and strong. In fact, it looked better than ever.
Try to Avoid Damage to Grow Long Hair
Unfortunately, styling your hair can be damaging depending on the method you use. Damaged hair is also harder to detangle and the more your attempt to remove tangles, the more damage can be done.
Direct heat styling products like curling irons and blow dryers break down the hairs hydrogen bond causing the hair to look damaged. Basically, heat destroys the protein and causes damage to the cuticle.
You probably still want to style your hair, and that's okay, just try to limit how often you use direct heat styling tools. Using a heat protectant can also minimize damage
Instead of a blow-dry, can you get a beachy look with a light leave in conditioner? Allowing your hair to air dry when possible will reduce the amount of damage these hot tools do. Also, using a hair mask may also improve hair health.
If your hair is already heat damaged, you might consider using a deep conditioner mask for the hydrating benefits it will bring to your hair.
Choose Hairstyles That Cause Less Damage
As many of us are committed to a particular hair look, you may not be ready to give up your current hairstyle, even if it is causing damage.
If that's the case, do everything you can to reduce additional damage. Use a silk pillowcase, avoid overbrushing wet hair, and stimulate blood flow to the scalp with a scalp massager.
Hairstyle fads come and go, so whether or not you choose yours based on a fad or how much damage it does, is up to you. Having said that, here are a few tips:
- low ponytails are less damaging
- tight braids that cause tension on your scalp can lead to hair loss
- tight buns at the nape of your neck put less strain on your scalp
- bleach and other chemical treatments that lighten your hair cause more damage than a permanent dye if you color your hair
DIY Methods to Grow Long Hair
Some people swear by the castor oil method to grow hair longer than it would naturally without intervention. I tried it myself for a year and had great results. In fact, it's one of the ways I boosted my hair growth as outlined in the following article.
There are plenty of over the counter supplements targeted at people who are looking to grow their hair out. These healthy hair formulas often contain mostly biotin, omega-3 fatty acids and vitamins and minerals. If you're interested in using a supplement, consult your dermatologist or look for one in your area who can help you obtain healthier hair.
A Final Word about Hair Loss
If you're trying to grow your hair but continue to experience hair loss, it's important to consult your doctor or dermatologist. There can be medical conditions that cause hair loss.
A trichologist can legally give you products to help grow new hair based on your hair type, but a dermatologist is medically trained to look at scalp biopsies and determine if you have a medical condition keeping you from growing hair.
After following the techniques I've outlined in this article and the post linked above, my hair was as long as it had ever been, you can see it in this video about my make up routine in my 40's. Now, at 51, my hair is still long, strong and looks super healthy.
