Argan Oil is produced from Argan fruit that grows on an Argan tree found in Morocco. The Argania Spinosa trees are fruit bearing, and since Argan Oil is made from the kernel inside of the pit of the fruit Argan oil is considered nut-free. It is important to search for quality certified 100% Argan oil as some oils on the market have been diluted with other oils. For this post, I am using Actually Organic 100% Argan Oil.
Argan Oil is made of unsaturated fatty acids, Vitamin E/tocopherols, squalene, and sterols. Each of these unique nutrients is useful for different reasons. They act as antioxidants, help with chronic inflammation and are even known for their ability to protect against skin cancer and for being anti-tumorigenic. (source)
I started using Argan Oil years ago when I got a sample from a beauty store. Recently, I tried the ActuallyOrganic Brand and found the quality to be superior to any I have tried previously. I appreciated that it had no fragrance added, no other oils mixed in, no chemicals, no funky rancid smell, and it is cold pressed!
Over the last month or so, I have decluttered my beauty routine to simply use Argan oil as much as possible. I am over the moon about the results. Now, I want to share Argan Oil with you as one of My Favorite Things.
Let's look at a few of the ways I experimented with Argan Oil.
The following list is in order of benefit based on my own needs. This list is not all-inclusive, so if you know of any other ways I could use Argan Oil please share in the comment section at the end of this post.
1 – Softens cuticles and conditions nails
My skin tends to be on the extremely dry and sensitive side. I often have painfully dry cuticles. Before bed each night I added a drop of oil to each nail massaging it in. Leaving the oil on my nails overnight made a big difference in the softness of my cuticles.
2 – Deep Conditions Hair and Controls Dry Scalp
Since my skin is usually very dry my scalp can sometimes get irritated as the dry skin is bothersome. I started massaging about a tablespoon of the Argan Oil into my scalp and hair before bedtime, then covering it with a hair turban. This kept it off my sheets and in my hair. In the morning I simply washed my hair as usual. After several treatments, the condition of my scalp has been greatly improved.
My hair also feels incredibly soft and has lost that brittle feeling it had before using Argan oil. I have pretty thick and long hair, so if your hair is shorter you might want to adjust the amount you start with.
3 – Conditioning Smoother to manage frizzy hair
On days in between my deep conditioning treatments, I used a few drops of Argan Oil on the ends of my hair to manage frizz and split ends. I adore the way it makes my hair feel.
4 – Eliminates Razor Bumps
Since I've been in my forties my skin has been more sensitive than ever. I have tried so many remedies to deal with the bumps that occur after shaving but nothing seemed to help. I started spraying some Argan oil onto my legs before towel drying after a shower. Because I applied it while my pores were still open, I believe it made a bigger difference. My itchy razor bumps completely vanished and my legs are silky smooth! Now if only they were tan!
5 – Heals dry cracked heels
One thing I can't stand is to have dry heels. I use a Mr. Pumice Bar every single time I shower to keep my heels super smooth. I started rubbing Argan Oil onto my heels before putting on my gym socks in the mornings. Since I started this practice my heels are as soft as baby's feet!
6 – Acne
Most of my life I have been lucky concerning acne and breakouts. I rarely had pimples as a teenager. Once I hit my forties, I did start to see some acne on my chin which indicates a hormone imbalance. While waiting to get that straightened out again, I began using Argan Oil on a few blemishes. Apparently, due to the high linoleic acid content, it reduces inflammation and speeds healing of damaged cells.
One particular blemish that just would not go away finally responded to the Argan Oil in less than 24 hours.
7 – Body Moisturizer
I like to use coconut oil and Jojoba Oil as a moisturizer. Since I don't wear perfume, I like to add essential oils to my moisturizer. I tried adding some Argan oil in with my carrier oils with excellent results. My skin felt dewy soft all day long!
8 – Bath Oil
I frequently take baths using Magnesium Flakes and just recently started adding a few drops of Argan Oil to moisturize my skin while bathing. One warning, though, it does make the tub a bit slippery so use caution!
9 – Lip Softener
In the winter I tend to get chapped, dry, painful lips often. One night I sprayed a bit too much Argan Oil in my hands for moisturizing my hair and face, so I just went ahead and put it on my lips as well. The next morning my lips looked and felt amazing! I started using it each night after I brushed my teeth. I love how soft my lips have become since starting this routine.
10 – Make up booster
Because my skin is ultra dry, when I wear foundation I have found that it tends to look flaky by the end of the day. I wanted to thin out my foundation a bit, so I added a few drops of Argan Oil to a pump of my foundation. I mixed it in the palm of my hand and applied it to my face. At the end of the day, my makeup looked just as good as when I first applied it!
In addition to helping my look last all day, it also brought out a dewy glow on my skin! Bonus!
I have also read that Argan Oil helps to minimize stretch marks and has great anti-aging properties. It's said to restore elasticity to skin, soften wrinkles and reduce fine lines. Hey, it's worth a try!
Meanwhile, every time we use our Argan Oil, let's imagine we're in Morroco.
