You remember that movie Cheaper By the Dozen (the original version)? That has always been one of my favorites! If you have seen it, you will recall that Mr. Gilbreth, the father, was an efficiency expert. Later in the movie, his wife begins helping him with his work. I always loved the idea of being an “efficiency expert” because I cannot stand wasting time. I'm always trying to do things in the most efficient way possible, or even to do multiple things at once.
Now, I'm not recommending you do anything else while pooping, but I do have a suggestion for how you can poop more efficiently. Back in 2005, I read a book (the original) The Raw Food Detox Diet: The Five-Step Plan for Vibrant Health and Maximum Weight Loss (Raw Food Series) by Natalia Rose. That book ignited my passion for consuming more raw foods, but it also taught me one valuable little trick for being more efficient at pooping. She called it having a “stool for your stool” and that is exactly what we started doing after I read the book. Now, before you click away from this page, just hear me out. (And by all means, check out the photo at the bottom of this page.)
Waste Management 101: Using a stool for your stool can truly help you become an efficiency expert at this every day (I hope) activity. Modern toilets actually position you naturally in a sitting position. Our bodies were designed to squat, not sit, when pooping, therefore going number two on a modern toilet does not allow the kink in your colon (it is there to prevent incontinence) to become fully relaxed. So, you must be in proper alignment to have efficient, effective bowel movements. That's why proper sitting posture on the toilet opens up this kink and allows everything to flow out smoothly. Stick with me now, it gets better.
Inefficient pooping can lead to all sorts of problems from constipation, hemorrhoids, impacted colon, toxicity and even pelvic floor prolapse. So, if you have some of those problems, chances are you've been pooping all wrong. All. These. Years. Don't believe me? Maybe you'll believe Microbiologist Giulia Enders in This Article where she explains how you've been doing it all wrong. Now, on to the how-to.
At first we just used a small bathroom stool (because there were plenty of small kids in the house) and it worked okay, however, it didn't fit in front of the toilet so great and your feet had to be in front of you as opposed to slightly to the side, which was awkward. Also, the stool moved around quite a bit and I often stubbed my toe on it heading to the bathroom at night.

Finally, we found a solution to the dilemma when we ordered a Squatty Potty for two of the toilets in our home. By clicking on the (affiliate) links on this page, you will be redirected to the Squatty Potty website where you can learn more about this little life hack. They have also created a very entertaining video explaining everything you would ever want to know about how and why Squatty Potty works. Kids can watch it just for the laugh. (Don't get side-tracked though, the best photo is at the bottom of this post.)
My children love using the Squatty Potty (see photo below) and (often embarrassing) conversations come up at the most inopportune moments. However, I can honestly say that everyone in our family has healthy elimination. Kids love talking about this subject, and they love to share this information with teachers, grocery store clerks, and other random people they meet. Keep reading!!!
You bet your booty this is an affiliate post! I love my Squatty Potty and so do my family members. So, please take a moment to pin, tweet, or share to your Facebook Status and help us spread the (LOL) news about having more efficient poop for better health. When you do you help support my efficient sharing of healthy ideas by supporting this website.
Make sure you are subscribed to my Podcast where we will be doing more bathroom talk in the upcoming weeks! 😉
